quick thoughts on the lakeside fight in episode 25:

this scene and this episode in general are where we start to see parts of di feisheng, as he stands in the jinyuan alliance, bleed back into a-fei. imo it starts just before the liansanjiao come to the lake; that sequence begins with the three of them walking along the path, and a-fei is carrying his blade in his hand. as far as i can remember and according to the screenshot evidence i have, whenever di feisheng is in disguise as a-fei he always, always carries his blade strapped to his back. this is the first time we see a-fei deviate from that, and the only time di feisheng ever holds his blade like this is when he's travelling as di-mengzhu, in more formal robes. there's little habits of di feisheng beginning to return to a-fei, slowly.

then, we get to the actual fight. a-fei's only memory of fighting as di feisheng that he has at this point is the glimpse of him on the road in episode 23, taking people down with one stroke of his blade. in the two flashbacks he's experienced, this one mentioned and his childhood memory, he was killing with little to no hesitation.

that's very pointedly not what a-fei does here. in contrast to the lull in action we get to highlight fang duobing cutting someone's throat with a smirk, a-fei is only striking and blocking people with his scabbard or by kicking/punching. he never draws his blade. the windy poplar technique, too, only pushes people away from him. it most likely wasn't fatal.

all a-fei remembers from before is killing. he's making a deliberate choice now not to, even when others around him on both sides are.

a moment later, a-fei's confrontation with xue gong shakes loose a memory of di feisheng before the jinyuan alliance, and this is the first he's told that he led the people a-fei currently considers his enemy. from then on the division between a-fei and di feisheng is broken, and all anyone can hope for is that the recovery of his memories will go as smoothly as it can. but there's enough that a-fei has experienced now that he won't, and i don't think he can, just snap back to his old self. he's made choices as a-fei that he won't shake off easily in the future and i think this is where that permanent change has noticeably begun to show.

I was going to make a joke that Li Lianhua plays up being pathetic when he's got two big strong men there to protect him. But actually it's probably not far from the truth. How many times do you think he's had to stay awake, or at least on guard, for fear that someone might figure out his identity and come looking for him. Now he's with two people one of whom knows his identity and one who has sworn to protect him no matter what. It's actually safe for him to relax and get some sleep so he's going to do just that.

Oh my god. Fang Duobing offered Di Feisheng some bread and Di Feisheng took it! I'm crying.

AND THEN DI FEISHENG SHARED HIS WATER WITH FANG DUOBING. Are they in love now? Is that's what's happening here? MY HEART.

Dashing Youth Ep 1-10 Commentary

Alrighty let's organise all my thoughts in neat lil piles.

1. Personally the type of Wuxia I enjoy is the more subdued, mature and philosophical vibe like that of Sword Snow Stride and Mysterious Lotus Casebook. I rarely watch youthful, lighthearted, rom-comey wuxia/xianxia/xuanhuan. I didn't enjoy BoY a lot and I still wonder how I managed to finish it, the few characters I loved were Wuxin, Tang Lian, Zhao Yuzhen, Prince Chong and Prince Lingchen, because they had the acting style and character arcs that were closer to my preferences.

I clicked on Dashing Youth just for the curiosity and out of "since I watched BoY anw, I'm kinda obligated for this" feeling, but unexpectedly, within 10 mins I was in love lol. Many of the actors I already know and love, the bromance is instantaneous and strong, the promise of a good tragedy is alluring, and I could enter the worldbuilding faster because I already know what to expect from this universe.

AND I ADORE how the casting directors seem to have chosen actors with BLs/BL-vibe shows under their belt for all the important roles, they all know exactly what to do and like:

I for one am not mad about all the CP pushing promo the showmakers are doing. I mean, even if this was a super straight story we'll end up with gay fanfics anyway, right? So just as well we get to see our fantasies haha 😏

(In fact, instinctively performing Qimen Dunjia is possibly how LMS figured out the trajectory the other boys were going to be in LMAO)

Now they need to add some tomb robbing jokes when Bai Shu and Neo interact and it'd be perfect!

Also it feels kinda fateful that Lei Wujie would go bond with Xiao Se, Lei Mengsha was best bros with his uncle Langya.

This is very much Guardian/Rattan kind of story, I like it a LOT better than Goblin, its mini arcs keep making me cry, its ‘alien’ premise has a much more ‘metaphor for Love and Redemption style heavenly realm/demons’ which while it makes the sci fi kind of ‘handwave’ does make the whole story feel VERY much modern setting fantasy, like Shadowhunters or Buffy which I love, with the flavor of characters with pasts to the kind of degree LaR tended to have with some many centuries/millenia old players and potentially reincarnation involved which is interesting to see executed in a modern-fantasy cdrama. In short I didn’t expect to love this but I am binging now it so).

Its got comedy, political intrigue, terror, suspense, romance, genuinely great characterization and arcs throughout, it is Great - and while its mostly more grounded in its storytelling sometimes it does some wacky stuff or dream sequences which is a fun way to break the tension/seriousness/groundedness for a little while)

The Scarlet Heart (now i want to compare this to jplh, but also hella confused because its like... the same time period and time traveller too... was jplh a rip off at first?? lol)

In my Cdrama??? Its less common than it should be but god it finally EXISTS here - and as always, I recommend Bureau of Transformer for those who want excellently written Sci Fi with a Twilight Zone vibe that’s short and sweet and absolutely beloved by me. My point is - please give me more genuine sci fi cdramas T-T)
